This test evaluates a candidate’s ability to give the everyday care expected of Health Care Assistants (HCAs) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), at home or in a care facility. It looks at how they handle emergencies and first aid, how they monitor a patient’s condition, and how they move patients and care for catheters safely. It also looks at how they communicate with the person in their care.
It helps you hire care staff who respond to emergencies, monitor residents’ safety, and honor the choices of the people in their care.
If your candidates lack basic knowledge, they can put your residents’ safety at risk within a single shift. The Health Care Aide test will help you hire candidates who have the skills to care for residents safely.
Candidates who perform well on this test can:
Health care aides provide much of patients’ and residents’ direct daily care, and their knowledge and judgment impact safety on every shift. The Health Care Aide test assesses the practical abilities and clinical judgment that Health Care Assistants, Care Home Aides, and Nursing Assistants use when providing care.
Wetest’s Health Care Aide test is a role-specific skills test at the intermediate level and it only takes 10 minutes.
Candidates who score well on the test can recognize warning signs, know how to move residents safely, and respond to residents’ choices patiently and respectfully. For your team, this means new staff who are ready to keep residents safe from their first shifts.
The Health Care Aide test assesses candidates’ skills in four areas of daily care work. Candidates must know how to respond to emergencies, such as providing the correct CPR compression-to-breath ratio, administering first aid for burns, and controlling severe bleeding using pressure. They must also know how to manage acute asthma exacerbations and recognize stroke symptoms and a hypertensive emergency.
The test also assesses candidates’ knowledge of clinical monitoring, such as triaging blood pressure readings to determine the urgency of action, responding to hypoglycemic symptoms, and managing glucose levels. Candidates should know how to maintain safe bath temperatures and follow the steps for finger capillary blood sampling.
Candidates must also show their knowledge of moving patients and ensuring catheter safety. For example, they should know that mechanical lift transfers require two members of staff and that urinary catheters must be kept free of kinks.
Finally, the test covers person-centered communication, such as responding to a resident who refuses medication and supporting mealtime independence for residents with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease. It also covers respecting patient preferences in dementia care and following bathing hygiene procedures.
