A year ago today, I was looking for a job. It was indeed a challenging process since every job position either did not meet my standards or was too far from where I lived.

That is when an adorable friend of mine introduced me to Walmart. Although I have always known Walmart for its outstanding services and significantly low prices, I have never considered being one of the millions of people in this magnificent corporation.

Long story short, I was hired at a Walmart store and couldn’t be more excited. However, I had one more thing to worry about: Walmart’s orientation.

The process was quite fascinating. So now, a year from the day of my orientation, it would be a good idea to gather everything I have learned about the orientation process and share my own experience of working at Walmart.

In today’s blog, I am taking you on a journey to teach you everything you need about Walmart orientation. Pour a glass of hot chocolate, and keep reading!

What Is Walmart?

What is Walmart

Of course, if you are reading this blog, it means that you already know what Walmart is. However, diving deeper and hearing the story behind it wouldn’t be so bad.

As of December, 2025, Walmart employs approximately 2.1 million associates worldwide, with about 1.6 million of them in the United States. More than 90 percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store.

Walmart operates 10,822 stores and clubs across 19 countries and serves approximately 270 million customers and members each week, with total revenue of $179.7 billion in the third quarter of fiscal year 2025 alone (up 6% from the prior year).

You may be curious about who is behind this giant company. It all started with a small-town boy named Sam Walton, who promised himself to make an unforgettable change in the world. At the age of 26, when he returned home from the devastating events of World War II, He decided to run a chain of variety stores. It was so successful that Sam was encouraged to open his own store, and in 1962, he finally did.

And that is when Walmart was born. The very first Walmart store in the city of Arkansas.

What Should You Expect At A Walmart Orientation?

What Should You Expect At A Walmart Orientation?

Now, let’s get to the part we were all waiting for!

Remember, you may have different experiences. It is undoubtedly different for everyone. But generally speaking, here is what you should be expecting on your orientation day:

Watching Videos

You will probably spend most of the time watching some very informative and helpful videos about how the whole thing works and what you are expected to do at Walmart. Make sure you pay attention and take notes if you need to.

Remember, you may have different experiences. It is undoubtedly different for everyone. But generally speaking, here is what you should expect on your orientation day:

Paperwork

Trust me, it is not as dull as it sounds! You just need to complete some forms and submit your information to the computer. Plus, it will be over in the blink of an eye.

Tour

Tour

My favorite part was definitely the tour around the store. It is so fun getting to know where you will be working and the people you will be working with. Take your time walking around the store with your HR guide, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask and make things clear for yourself.

Name Tag

Another thing you have to do is to print your name tag, which will be over in less than fifteen minutes.

Assignments And Lessons

One of the most critical parts of your orientation is to learn about locating items and dealing with customers. It might be a bit confusing at first; you may even make many mistakes but do not worry. You will learn how to handle it eventually!

Personal Experience

Personal experience

I was stressed about my orientation. Even though I knew what was coming up, I feared the atmosphere would be stressful.

But it was way better than I thought it would be. Watching the videos was so helpful, and the process of getting to know the staff was enjoyable.

Ultimately, the person who did my orientation gave me my schedule. The orientation took me a couple of hours, and they told me I could start working immediately, which was great.

What to Bring to Walmart Orientation

If I could go back to my orientation day, I’d tell my nervous self to pack a little smarter, just the essentials. Showing up prepared takes away so much of that first-day jitters feeling!

Documents for the I-9 form is super important. Walmart needs to verify your identity to work in the U.S. The classics that work for most people are a driver’s license or state ID plus your original Social Security card.

A birth certificate paired with your ID is another combo. Don’t stress if you’re missing something. Check the official USCIS List of Acceptable Documents ahead of time, and if needed, talk to your HR contact.

If you haven’t set up direct deposit yet on the Me@Walmart app, jot down your bank routing and account numbers. It’ll save time when they help you get payroll sorted.

Bring a pen and notepad For comfort during those long sessions of videos and computer modules. I wish I had, because there are tons of useful tips you’ll want to write down.

A water bottle and some snacks are lifesavers too; the room can get warm, and breaks aren’t always predictable.

And don’t forget your fully charged phone with a charger if possible. You might need it for app setups or quick references.

What Is the Dress Code for Walmart Orientation?

On the morning of my orientation, I stood in front of my closet panicking a little! What if I showed up looking too casual or way overdressed? Turns out, I wasn’t alone in that worry, and the good news is Walmart keeps it pretty straightforward and forgiving for your first day.

The unofficial rule for orientation is business casual with a relaxed vibe. Wear comfortable and professional enough to make a good first impression without feeling stuffy.

Go for a collared shirt like a polo or button-up in a color like navy, white, or anything neutral, paired with khakis, dress pants, or nice dark jeans. Jeans are fine as long as they’re neat.

For shoes, closed-toe and comfortable is key. You’ll be walking around for the tour and sitting through modules, so sneakers or flats are perfect. Avoid shorts, sweatpants, graphic tees, flip-flops, or anything too revealing.

The HR team even goes over the full employee dress code during orientation, so if you’re unsure, you’ll get all the details there.

How Long Is Orientation At Walmart On Average?

It depends on the position you have been hired for. Orientation is now structured as a one‑day program lasting 4–10 hours. This covers online Ulearns with store walkthroughs, interactive training, and hands-on practice. The exact length can vary by location and how quickly you complete computer modules.

When Do You Start Working After The Orientation?

When Do You Start Working After The Orientation?

There is no direct answer to this question. The answer will be different depending on your position and the branch you are working with.

You see, orientation is your first day at work. However, there is usually a short waiting period between your orientation day and the rest. But as I said, it all depends on the situation. In some cases like mine, people started working right away.

In order to get some clarification, please ask when you can start working.

Does Walmart Pay For Orientation?

Yes, it does. Although each Walmart store does have its own specific rules, this one always stays the same. Orientation is a part of your job, and you will be paid for every single minute your orientation lasts.

Time in both the online modules and in‑person sessions is compensated at your standard hourly rate, which, as of 2026, starts between $14–$19 per hour for team associates in the U.S., with an average of $18.25 per hour.

FAQs

Why Did Walmart Become So Successful?

Aside from the hard work and effort Sam had, it is good to know that Walmart was one of the very few that used barcodes to keep track of their inventory. With the help of barcodes, they were able to see what product was more in demand so they could order more of it.

This started a massive wave of change in the American retail economy since it made retailers order products based on what the customer needs at the moment and not the producer’s production schedule.

What If You Miss Walmart Orientation Day?

See, one of the most critical things Walmart needs to make sure of is your reliability and your sense of responsibility. You must show up on the first day of orientation to be trusted.

Although nothing is impossible, they may give you a second chance if you are lucky. If you can’t attend your orientation, ask them if they can reschedule. But try not to miss the first day as much as possible.

Does Walmart Conduct A Drug Test Before Orientation?

Walmart no longer conducts pre-employment drug tests for most new hires as of 2026. Testing may occur for safety positions, following injuries, or if there is reasonable suspicion of impairment.

What Documents Do I Need to Bring to Walmart Orientation?

You’ll need originals for the I-9 form to verify your work eligibility like a driver’s license and Social Security card, or a passport. Also, bring bank info for direct deposit if not set up yet.

Does Walmart Require a Background Check Before Orientation?

Yes! After a conditional job offer, Walmart runs a background check via a third-party like HireRight that reviews criminal history, employment, and education. It takes 3-7 days.

What Kind of Training Happens During Walmart Orientation?

You’ll do interactive modules on safety, customer service, anti-harassment, and role-specific tasks like using the handheld scanner or zoning shelves.

Can I Reschedule My Walmart Orientation If Needed?

Yes! Contact your store’s HR or personnel manager ASAP with a valid reason. They’re flexible for part-time roles, but repeated changes might raise flags about reliability.

Last Words

I can say that I have learned and experienced so many wonderful things at the Walmart store. You will get to know new people, and you will be a part of a society in which you have the opportunity to grow.

There will be challenges. Maybe you encounter difficulties in getting along with your colleagues or feel confused about how to get things done even after training. But that is totally normal. Give yourself and Walmart a chance.

I genuinely hope this article has helped you get a little more familiar with the Walmart orientation process. And I wish you luck!
