Use the Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test to hire

Candidates who do well on the test have good Norwegian grammar and word order. They can understand workplace notices and short informational texts, and can catch exact times, dates, and instructions in spoken announcements.

You can screen all applicants who have listed Norwegian on their resume. Then you don’t need to rely on one line on a resume to assess Norwegian language skills. This test is a shared measure that you can use to compare applicants and then reserve interviews for candidates with the best grammar, reading, and listening scores.

Using the Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test to hire has many benefits. It can save you interview time, help reduce the risk of a mis-hire, and mean fewer misread messages, fewer missed appointments, and fewer grammar errors in your team’s output.

Job roles employers can hire using the Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test

Candidates who perform well on the Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test suit roles that require Norwegian on a daily basis:
  • Bilingual Customer Support Representatives (Nordic Desk): Handle Norwegian-speaking customer questions and log details of requests
  • Junior Administrative Associates: Handle routine correspondence, file documents, and maintain calendars
  • Logistics Coordinators: Track shipments and relay schedule changes to drivers, warehouses, and clients
  • Travel & Hospitality Assistants: Confirm bookings, explain arrival times, and pass announcements to guests
  • Regional Operations Support Officers: read internal notices and keep local teams updated on procedures
  • Client Services Associates for Norwegian-Speaking Markets: Answer client messages and follow up on appointments

About the Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test

Reading a notice or booking an appointment in Norwegian takes a working command of the language, not native fluency. On the CEFR, the six-level scale from A1 to C2, that is B1. The official Norskprøven test uses the same scale.

Wetest’s Norwegian B1 test is set at CEFR B1, equivalent to Norskprøve B1. In 10 minutes it covers grammar, vocabulary, sentence composition, reading, and listening, based on situations from work and daily life.

Candidates who score well use correct noun forms and word order, understand practical workplace and community texts, and pull exact details from spoken Norwegian. Hiring them reduces misunderstandings with Norwegian-speaking clients and colleagues.

What does the Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test measure?

The Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test evaluates candidates’ accuracy using Norwegian language in four areas related to the workplace:

  • Grammar and word forms: Candidates show their ability to use Norwegian grammar and word forms correctly, including noun plurals, reflexive pronouns, position and motion verbs, and fixed prepositional phrases.
  • Sentence mechanics: The test evaluates candidates’ ability to use correct sentence mechanics, including verb-second word order, where the verb comes second in a main clause, the position of adverbs in subordinate clauses, and the use of concessive connectors.
  • Vocabulary and reading: The test evaluates candidates’ vocabulary and reading skills, including the ability to identify synonyms, read workplace notices, and read texts on environmental and social subjects, such as electric vehicle costs, sustainable energy, and dugnad.
  • Listening for detail: Candidates demonstrate their ability to listen to Norwegian audio clips and identify exact facts, such as schedules, appointments, and official announcements.
Spoken Norwegian and longer written texts are not part of the Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test. Roles with phone calls, negotiations, or longer Norwegian reports call for a structured interview or short writing task as well.

FAQ

This is a screening test for hiring, set at the Norskprøve B1 equivalent level. The official exam that documents a candidate’s Norwegian language skills is Norskprøven. When you need official proof, ask candidates to provide their Norskprøven results in addition to this test.
The Norwegian B1 (Intermediate) test takes 10 minutes to complete. Its short length enables you to place candidates early in the process without asking applicants to spend extra time on the test.
B1 is often sufficient for a job built on standard procedures and everyday messages. If the job requires complex negotiations or legal texts, consider a higher CEFR level. Using a CEFR level gives candidates a clear standard to aim for and gives your team a clear standard to hire against.
