Use the Mandarin C1 (Advanced) test to hire

In a language-critical role, a wrong level of Mandarin shows up in daily work as language errors. A resume line can’t tell you in advance, and it doesn’t show whether a candidate can read a technical report accurately or follow a spoken briefing.

This 10-minute test does. Candidates who perform well spot grammar and word-order errors, build complex sentences correctly, follow specialized texts, and infer a speaker’s implications and expected next steps.

Use it at the application stage so only applicants at the required level move forward. Keep the results for the shortlist, where identical tasks let you compare finalists and plan interviews around any gaps.

Job roles employers can hire using the Mandarin C1 (Advanced) test

There are six roles in which advanced proficiency in Mandarin affects daily work quality:
  • Senior Mandarin Translators: Translate texts and review them. A complement or modifier in the wrong position can change the meaning of a sentence.
  • Localization Engineers: review Mandarin interface text and documentation in context and confirm that both read without errors.
  • Regional Operations Managers (Greater China and Asia-Pacific): Read reports and follow spoken briefings from Asia-Pacific teams.
  • Content Compliance Specialists: Review Mandarin content to ensure it does not contain implied claims or wording that breaches policy.
  • Corporate Communications Managers: Edit announcements and statements before releasing them to Mandarin-speaking audiences.
  • Senior Client Success Managers for Chinese-Speaking Markets: interpret calls and messages from clients. This includes their requests and preferences and the next steps agreed with them.

About the Mandarin C1 (Advanced) test

Organizations that offer services to Mandarin-speaking markets need employees who are able to use the language with precision. One word out of place in a contract clause can change its meaning. So can one word in a product message or a client instruction.

On the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, C1 is the advanced level, one step below C2. On the HSK, the standardized Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers, the comparable range is HSK 5–6. The Mandarin C1 (Advanced) test is set at this level.

Wetest’s Mandarin C1 (Advanced) test is a 10-minute language skills test. Candidates who perform well on this test can review Mandarin copy for errors, understand technical materials, and act correctly when receiving spoken instructions.

As a result, your team has a clearer view of who is able to communicate in Mandarin and to produce Chinese-language content that holds up in review.

What does the Mandarin C1 (Advanced) test measure?

Candidates are tested in four areas:

  • Grammar: Candidates must identify syntax errors regarding potential complement placement. They are also assessed on modifier-noun agreement and word order.
  • Syntax and writing: Candidates must construct correct complex sentences incorporating prepositional phrases, adverbial modifiers, and object complements.
  • Reading comprehension: Candidates work through informational texts that go beyond everyday topics, from mobile payments and cetacean sleep to folk traditions, cognitive science, and physical health.
  • Listening comprehension: Candidates must interpret implied meaning, preferences, and action steps in professional spoken dialogues and announcements.

FAQ

No. It is a short screening test for hiring. An HSK certificate is awarded only to people who pass an official HSK exam, and HSK 5–6 works here as a level reference, not as a credential.
No. The listening section shows how well candidates understand spoken Mandarin, but candidates are not asked to speak. For roles that require someone to present, negotiate, or interpret live, add a structured interview in Mandarin to hear how they speak.
The CEFR C1 level indicates an advanced user who is capable of handling complex and specialized materials in academic and professional contexts. But candidates report their levels in different ways, so the Mandarin C1 (Advanced) test lets you check each applicant’s proficiency claim against a common standard.
C1 is the right level for roles that need someone to do editorial review, to read specialized texts, or to make decisions based on spoken Mandarin. For a role that requires only everyday conversation, a lower-level test is likely to be a better fit.
