Use the Japanese C1 (Advanced) test to hire

Senior roles that run on Japanese need people who can handle the language at a high level. A candidate who scores well on the Japanese C1 (Advanced) test reads advanced grammar structures with ease. They can work through dense Japanese texts. They can also pick out precise details from rapid announcements.

The test takes 10 minutes, so you can send it to every applicant with the application. You’ll know who has C1-level Japanese before you review resumes in detail, and your interviews go to people who have already shown it.

In roles that depend on Japanese, that lowers the risk of a mis-hire. After the hire starts, you’re also likely to see fewer misread instructions, mistranslated terms, and misunderstood client requests.

Job roles employers can hire using the Japanese C1 (Advanced) test

Roles where advanced Japanese is crucial for daily work include:
  • Senior Japanese Translators and Localization Specialists, who interpret nuanced source texts and adapt content for Japanese audiences
  • Executive Business Consultants (Japan Market), who analyze Japanese market reports and advise senior clients
  • Regional Account Executives, who manage Japanese-speaking client accounts and follow detailed client-team briefings
  • Senior Content Operations Managers, who oversee Japanese content workflows and verify the accuracy of published material
  • Customer Success Directors, who lead relationships with Japanese-speaking customers and act on their feedback
  • Compliance Associates for Japanese-Speaking Operations, who review Japanese-language regulatory notices and procedural instructions

About the Japanese C1 (Advanced) test

A contract clause is read one way, and the client meant another. A figure is misheard on a call, and the report that follows is wrong. In Japanese-language work, small slips like these can change the meaning of a whole document.

The Japanese C1 (Advanced) test shows who is unlikely to make them. It takes 10 minutes, and strong performers can follow Japanese news reports, medical instructions, and broadcast announcements, including the arguments, steps, and figures inside them.

Use it for roles such as client correspondence or internal reporting. The people who do well need less checking and rework.

What does the Japanese C1 (Advanced) test measure?

The Japanese C1 (Advanced) test evaluates candidates’ accuracy in Japanese language skills necessary for executive-level business work, assessing candidates in four areas:

  • Grammar & vocabulary: Candidates must use formal language structures, such as emphatic assertions, limit/extent patterns, compound expressions, and double-particle sequence ordering. In addition, candidates must demonstrate comprehension of contextual nuances in advanced vocabulary.
  • Simple sentence composition: The test gauges candidates’ ability to order elements of Japanese sentences correctly, indicating their capacity to build accurate sentences.
  • Reading comprehension: Candidates must understand news reports, medical instructions, classical literature essays, and statistical demographic charts, including metaphorical passages in literary writing.
  • Listening comprehension: The test evaluates candidates’ ability to extract exact sequence steps, quantitative calculations, and the core message from fast native Japanese broadcasts and announcements.
Speaking and extended writing fall outside the test, so candidates have no way to show how they perform in a live meeting or draft a full business letter. If you are hiring someone who will need these skills, pair the results of this test with a structured interview in Japanese or a short writing sample.

FAQ

No. It is a 10-minute pre-employment assessment at a level equivalent to JLPT N1, and it is not designed to issue a JLPT certificate. So, if your role formally requires one, ask candidates to provide their JLPT results separately.
The CEFR and JLPT are structured differently, so any match between them is approximate. The CEFR describes what a language user is able to do across skills, while the JLPT is focused on language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading, and listening. For more details, check the JLPT test sections. The Japanese C1 (Advanced) test is set at CEFR C1, which is treated here as equivalent to JLPT N1.
No single test can cover everything a translator does. This one is a good first filter, but a translator also needs strong writing in the target language and subject knowledge, and those fall outside the test. For translation or localization roles, ask for a short translation sample that reflects the content your team typically deals with.
