Summary of HIPAA test

The HIPAA test covers the health insurance portability and accountability Act. It checks candidates’ knowledge of the privacy rules and security standards, as well as compliance protocols and data protection guidelines. This screening test will help you hire candidates who can effectively manage protected health information (PHI) in accordance with the requirements of HIPAA.

Covered skills

  • Understanding HIPAA’s structural requirements
  • Applying HIPAA requirements
  • Preventing negative consequences through HIPAA
  • Using HIPAA as a leverage point

Use the HIPAA test to hire

In healthcare roles, one unauthorized disclosure can lead to civil or criminal penalties. So you want to know who understands the rules before they handle patient information.

The HIPAA test shows who knows the rules. High scorers can name the rule that governs a disclosure, share only what a request requires, and recognize when a breach must be reported. They also understand how business associate agreements apply to vendors and subcontractors.

Send it with the application. Interviews go to people who have shown the level, and your team is likely to make fewer errors with records requests and ePHI.

Job roles employers can hire using the HIPAA test

The HIPAA test suits roles in which people handle, protect, or oversee patient information:

  • HIPAA Privacy Officers develop privacy policies, respond to complaints, and oversee how the organization uses and discloses PHI.
  • Compliance Specialists review procedures, run internal audits, and track changes in privacy and security requirements.
  • Healthcare Administrators manage daily operations and vendor relationships, including BAAs.
  • Medical Records Managers control access to patient records and approve release requests.
  • Health Information Management (HIM) Technicians maintain health records and check each release request against HIPAA’s authorization requirements.
  • Practice Managers run clinic operations and train front-office staff on patient privacy.
  • Healthcare IT Security Analysts monitor systems, manage access controls, and secure the transmission of ePHI.

About the HIPAA test

When patients share sensitive health details with their providers, insurers, and business partners, they expect that information to stay private. The federal HIPAA rules protect it, and even the smallest mistake by a staff member can lead to penalties and loss of patient trust.

Wetest’s 10-minute HIPAA test is set at an intermediate level. It assesses candidates’ role-specific skills, with a focus on the operational knowledge and legal understanding that HIPAA compliance work needs.

Candidates who do well on it can apply the rules as well as recall them. They know when a records request needs signed authorization and how much PHI to include in a billing query.

Strong HIPAA knowledge is the foundation, and this test confirms it early. Pair it with a structured interview and reference checks, and you’ll also see how candidates approach your own policies and how they work alongside your team.

What does the HIPAA test measure?

Candidates who take this HIPAA test show how they understand and apply HIPAA’s Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules in day-to-day compliance tasks.

It comprises eight critical question areas:

  • Preemption: Determining whether HIPAA or state law applies when they conflict, including when a state law is more protective than federal law
  • Penalties: Identifying both civil and criminal penalties following unauthorized disclosure of protected health information (PHI)
  • De-identification: Applying the Safe Harbor method and removing 18 specified identifiers from health data
  • Business associates: Managing business associate agreements (BAA) and determining when PHI disclosure to subcontractors is permissible
  • Patient access and authorizations: Handling patient requests to access records and checking the validity of release authorizations
  • Minimum necessary disclosures: Limiting the sharing of PHI for purposes of payment and healthcare operations
  • Breach notification: Recognizing when an incident constitutes a breach and executing the necessary notification steps
  • ePHI security: Ensuring the security of electronic protected health information (ePHI) as it moves between systems, staff, and outside partners

FAQ

The test is a pre-employment screening of knowledge at the time of hire and not a certification. A course certificate on a candidate’s resume shows they completed training, whereas the test gives you direct evidence of what they know. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) does not endorse or recognize private organizations’ certifications of HIPAA Security Rule compliance, as stated in the HHS FAQ on certifying compliance.
No. Under the Privacy Rule, covered entities must train new workforce members on their PHI policies and procedures within a reasonable period after they join. Health plans and health care providers are both covered entities.

Candidates who score well on the test already know how to request and disclose records under HIPAA’s core rules, so you can focus onboarding on your organization’s policies and procedures.
The HIPAA test is set at an intermediate level and does not show how a candidate handles strategy. In the interview, ask senior candidates to explain how they would design a policy and respond to an incident, and how they would weigh a risk.
